Surveys in the 1980s detected oil reserves below Lake Tanganyikca but production has yet to begin. Burundi imports gasoline from Iran and electricity from Zaire. However, once the HEP plants at Mugera and Rwegura are operational, they will meet most domestic electricity requirements.
